Business Specialist – Oncology Medical Affairs

Position Summary

The Business Specialist, Oncology Medical Affairs, is responsible for leading the tactical management of business and financial planning activities within an assigned tumour-area. The incumbent will serve as the primary point of contact for entering and managing all medical activities within AstraZeneca’s internal financial systems—including the mapping of actuals, monthly accruals, monthly rephasing, and the oversight of both high-level and detail-level operational plans. This role requires close collaboration with medical affairs leaders and team members to ensure accurate tumour-area budgets and timely communication of risks and opportunities to Finance partners. The Business Specialist also provides contract and operations support by submitting and securing signature for Statements of Work (SOWs), and by partnering with the Operations Specialist to ensure generation and tracking of all purchase orders (POs).

This position is based onsite at our Mississauga, ON campus and reports directly to the Director, Finance and Business Planning for US Oncology Medical Affairs, while working closely with Strategic Project Managers (SPMs), Budget Owners, and US Finance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage Anaplan for the assigned tumour-area or franchise.
  • Partner with medical budget owners to identify spend trends and provide monthly reporting to franchise leadership regarding risks and opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with SPMs to submit financial operating plans.
  • Submit and obtain signatures for SOWs, in compliance with AstraZeneca procurement policies and procedures.
  • Provide updates and track SOW status in the AstraZeneca procurement system.
  • Oversee procurement activities, including submission and tracking of SOWs, as well as raising purchase orders and non-PO payments (for US Medical OBU, US ESR OBU, and HEOR).

Complexity

  • Lead monthly budget review meetings with Medical Franchises, monitoring and discussing year-to-date progress.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to communicate and resolve budgetary challenges, particularly during monthly and RBU/MTP financial cycles.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Establish and foster trust-based relationships with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Champion process improvements and lead efforts to simplify monthly budget activities.
  • Ensure full preparedness in the lead-up to financial reviews.
  • Deliver best-in-class service, ensuring franchises operate with optimal efficiency.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.), with a preferred focus in business.
  • Experience in budgeting, financial planning, and accounting.
  • Preferred experience in contract management.
  • Demonstrated expertise with project management tools and processes.
  • Strong ability in matrix management, with a focus on guiding diverse groups to achieve shared objectives.
  • Excellent communication skills, with proven ability to simplify complex information for various stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Coupa, SAP, and/or Anaplan.
  • Background in the pharmaceutical industry, with Medical Affairs and/or Oncology experience.
